The Valley of the Kings contains at least 63 tombs. Dating back to 1539 BC to 1075 BC, they begin with the tomb of Amenhotep and Thutmose. Other famous tombs in the area are King Tut and Ramesses X. The most recent discovery was in 2008, when they found a new chamber in an existing tomb. Some of the tombs extend far into the mountain, for instance Merrenptah's tomb is 160 metres long. Ruth and I toured the tombs, including The Valley of the Queens for one full day during our six weeks in Egypt. We were there in July and it was plenty hot, but worth the effort. We had hired a Horse & carriage with driver in Luxor and crossed over the Nile on an old ferry. Riding around in the open air under the carriage canopy kept us cool.
