During construction of the Anwar High Dam on the Nile River, the Abu Simbel Temple Complex was disassembled and reassembled on a high hill that now overlooks the lake. Abu Simbel is one of Egypt's top tourist attractions. The twin temples were originally constructed in approximately 1264 BC, over a 20 year period. Over time the temples were covered with sand and rediscovered in 1813.
Ruth and I drove here from Aswan, 170 miles through the desert. We found out later you were to have a armed escort to drive here. How were we to know? During our stay there we were the only people there for most of the time. A plane landed about noon and unloaded a group of Japanese,, they all took pictures and were gone in less than an hour. Our six week journey through Egypt was a trip we will never forget.
