The Wildlife Conservation Society's Queens Zoo welcomes a new Andean bear, the only bear species endemic to South America. Two year-old Bouba comes to Queens from a zoo in France and now shares his habitat with Spangles, a female Andean bear.
Queens Zoo Director Scott Silver serves as Species Survival Plan Coordinator for Andean bears for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and traveled overseas to bring Bouba to New York. Energetic and playful, Bouba is unrelated to any other Andean bear in North America and will add greatly to the genetic viability and demographic stability of Andean bear populations in AZA-accredited zoos. He's also a joy to watch. Bienvenue and bienvenido, Bouba!
