Maria do Céu Madureira is a Pharmacist and has a PHD in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry. She is passionate about S. Tomé and Príncipe (STP), where she has been working sInce 1993 in partnership with the Health Ministry in the Ethnopharmacological study of the country's Medicinal Plants, namely antimalarial species. The work developed has the purpose to maintain the autochthonous people's knowledge on traditional medicine and the uses of medicinal plants. She is Coordinator of Pagué Project, whose goal is to educate and encourage young researchers into the Ethnopharmacology field, and provide training to a working group in the islands, which should be able to join research activities in development process for new medicines made from natural products. She is a university teacher and a researcher at the Centre of Functional Ecology at University of Coimbra, and responsible for the research on the subject of Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use of Medicinal Plants in PALOP's (African Portuguese Speaking Countries).
