In this video we take you to the opening of Zhang Huan's exhibition Evoking Tradition at Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, New York. Storm King Art Center is a huge sculpture garden located one hour north of New York City, in the Hudson Valley. On a 500-acre landscape of fields, hills, and woodlands Storm King Art Center presents a collection of more than 100 sculptures created by artists such as Mark di Suvero, Carl Andre, Alexander Calder, Nam June Paik, Roy Lichtenstein, Sol Lewitt, Richard Serra, and many others. Zhang Huan's Evoking Tradition exhibition presents primarily sculptural works, as well as source materials, preparatory drawings, and video - both in the museum building and outdoors. We focus on the six outdoor sculptures: Peace No. 2 (2001), Gone Beyond (2008), Milly's Temple (2013), Head from Buddha Foot (2006), Long Island Duddha (2010-2011), and the largest of them, the Three Legged Buddha (2007). Zhang Huan was born in 1965 and began his career in the 1990s in Beijing, where he realized mostly performative work that was frequently politically engaged. In 1998 he moved to New York, often creating performances that addressed cultural difference and nomadism. In 2005 he returned to China. In his studio in Shanghai he currently focuses on sculpture and painting.
