At age 8 she had an accident crossing the rail tracks in her village in West Sudan and her left leg had to be amputated. She struggled through school with only her family's support, until she finished university. As her amputated limb muscles started to atrophy she was advised to play sports to get them back into shape. From that challenge she became an athlete who achieved medals in several Pan-Arab Paralympic events. While caring for a family and two children Bahja and her husband, who is also a disabled athlete, are hoping to compete at the Rio Paralympic games to represent their country supported by Realise The Dream (RTD) project.
