The Missouri Department of Conservation encourages you to discover nature and get outdoors to view bald eagles up close.
Every winter, the show-me-state welcomes record numbers of bald eagles and boasts some of the most plentiful viewing areas in all of the lower 48 states.
The best opportunity to see big groups of bald eagles is during their winter migration, from December through early February.
(Vic Bogosian, Missouri Dept. of Conservation) When they come through Missouri, they are using a lot of the same places that waterfowl are. They are an aquatic adaptive bird they feed around water. They nest around water so you tend to find them on places in Missouri that have water like our managed wetlands, big reservoirs, lakes, rivers places like that. (
Prime viewing spots in mid-Missouri include Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area in southern Boone county and Lake of the Ozarks Bagnell Dam.
Watch for eagles perched in large trees along the water's edge. View them early in the morning to see eagles flying and fishing. Make sure to dress for the winter weather and don't forget your binoculars and camera.
