This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Lauterbach talks about his scientific and political career that led him from high-tech medicine to medicine for the poorest of the poor. He talks about how social status and poverty can adversely affect the genetic setting of the youngest members of society, resulting in a life-long disadvantage and earlier death.

Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach is a German scientist and politician (SPD, Social Democratic Party of Germany). He is professor of health economics and epidemiology at the University of Cologne. Karl Lauterbach joined the SPD in 2001. He made his entry to the Bundestag 2005. In the Bundestag he is a member of the committee on health politics. Lauterbach is a strong advocate of the so-called Bürgerversicherung, mainly favoured by the Social Democrats. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
