John Fetrow was an undergraduate at MIT, studied veterinary medicine at the University of Minnesota, and received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. He has been a professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina State University, and the University of Minnesota. At Minnesota, he served as chair of the Department of Large Animal Medicine for five years and spent three years leading a major redesign of medical training and research across the university. John specializes in dairy medicine and more particularly on health economics in production agriculture. He takes a particular wry interest in the considerable difference in the economics of human medicine and veterinary medicine.

In his TEDxMahtomedi presentation, John points out the lack of knowledge that's behind skyrocketing health care costs and presents a simple, three-step plan for slashing the cost of health care while ensuring equitable access for everyone.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
