This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Mathematics provides an endless supply of patterns to inform and inspire musicians. The speaker discusses ideas at the intersection of math and music, and presents original compositions based on an ancient Greek method for finding prime numbers.
Robert Schneider is a Woodruff Graduate Fellow in Emory's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as a co-founder of The Elephant 6 Recording Company and lead singer and songwriter in pop group The Apples in Stereo. Schneider's research focuses mainly on analytic number theory, Eulerian series, and modular forms, but integrates his interests in physics, mathematical history, philosophy, astronomy, poetry, visual art, and experimental music. Schneider has worked on recent projects and inventions such as a "non-Pythagorean" musical scale, a musical score based on prime numbers, and a board game based on abstract algebra.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
