This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Horowitz explains general relativity but then incorporates quantum relativity and string theory to show how general relativity relates to superconductors and how these materials can revolutionize todays society.

Gary Horowitz received his Ph.D from the University of Chicago in 1979. Dr. Horowitz's research concerns both classical and quantum aspects of gravitational physics, focusing on questions involving gravity under the most extreme conditions. These include the big bang in cosmology and the spacetime inside black holes. His current research involves using gauge/gravity duality, an insight of string theory that allows one to relate problems in gravitational physics to problems in nongravitational physics, to better understand both quantum gravity and aspects of particle physics and condensed matter physics.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
