The haunting howl of a coyote fills the crisp winter air and it's hard to keep from shuddering. The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to help you to discover nature and learn more about coyote.

Similar in looks to a German Shepard dog, the Latin name for coyote means barking dog.

Contrary to popular belief, coyotes do not howl at the moon.
Instead, they howl to communicate with other coyotes.

Coyotes prefer open country rather than dense forest.
And while they can often be spotted in these areas, you have to know when to look.

Coyotes are not truly nocturnal animals.
They are what we consider crepuscular animals meaning that they will come out at dusk and at dawn.
Then they will lay up during the off hours.
During the middle of the day and during the middle of the night.

The coyote is Missouri's fastest mammal.
It can run 43 miles per hour.

Rabbits and mice make up almost two-thirds of the coyote diet, with other animal foods and plants—such as persimmons—making up the rest.
