John takes a look at some of the largest humanitarian interventions and relief efforts throughout history, and asks why we've struggled to make a lasting impact in repairing and improving people's lives. Drawing on his years of work in the sector, he suggests that humanitarians might have a thing or two to learn from social entrepreneurs.

John O'Shea is founder and former CEO of GOAL, an Irish non-governmental organisation devoted to assisting the poorest of the poor. Among his list of many achievements and awards, in 2008, he was conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Notre Dames in recognition of his work.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
