This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Ono speaks to her audience about how the women who suffered from the 311 disaster pulled together from their horrid situation and created an opportunity for themselves by began a knitting community. She described great stories of regular but amazing women who inspired to make more of themselves despite all the stereotypes placed upon them and encouraged them to pass on their stories to young girls who are just looking for a role model.

Just as Japan began experimenting with equal opportunity for women in the late 1980s, Yumiko started her career at The Wall Street Journal. She has chronicled the struggles of Japanese women to get ahead in the slow-changing society, as well as those who have managed to break through by turning adversity into opportunity. In 2003, she became the first woman at WSJ to become bureau chief in Asia, overseeing the Tokyo and Seoul bureaus.
