This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Steve's bio-region concept offers radical new thinking on how to restore not only threatened species and ecosystems but also whole communities. Steve believes devolving eco-management away from government will reconnect local people to their land, raising living standards in the process.

Steve Sawyer
Once called a "seabird evangelist" by New Zealand Geographic, Steve Sawyer set up an ecological restoration business, EcoworksNZ, more than 10 years ago. The Ecoworks team were the first to succeed in using acoustic attraction methods (essentially broadcasting very loud bird noises) to establish breeding grey faced petrel and fluttering shearwater at Young Nick's Head. Steve is a trustee on the Longbush Ecological Trust Board, which protects rare and endangered species of native plants and birds at the Longbush reserve "ark in the bush" near Gisborne. His border collie Tui is the only dog in the country that tracks and heads great spotted kiwi.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
