Child marriage affects every aspect of a girl’s life. For example, once married, these girls have little or no access to education and economic opportunities, and they and their families are more likely to live in poverty. Child brides also face a higher risk of suffering domestic and sexual violence. Child marriage impacts 15 million girls each year, including in the U.S. It’s not something people talk about. For example, I had no idea that until this year, girls in New Hampshire could marry at age 13. Thankfully, things are changing. This year, a young woman led the push to change the law. The best part of the story? That young woman just became a state legislator. Changing laws to protect girls from child marriages ensures their rights to education, to health, and to live in security.
