As children we learn that it is impolite to talk about money. Worse, we are told that talking about money makes us appear shallow, materialistic and aggressive. We've inherited this narrative and ostensibly seem willing to abide by it. As a society we have been told that women aren't as good at math and science. Allegedly they are also not as good as men at managing money. In his remarks, Tom Meredith points out the myths and asks girls and women of all ages several haunting questions: What do you lose by not asking? What do you stand to lose by not talking about the currency of life? By not writing your own narrative -- a narrative that matches with reality? Research shows that women are in fact as good in math and science as men. And, they are equally capable at managing money. Meredith's prayer for women of all ages is that they have the bravery to:

* Ask
* Believe
* Act

While directed at girls and women, Meredith's remarks also bear on fathers, brothers and sons. Men also have a responsibility to act on the new narrative. After all what does society gain by adhering to a narrative that is clearly flawed and disadvantages and disempowers half of the global population?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
