Thomas Strange has an extensive background in materials science, and is the author of 47 patents and numerous papers over the last three decades, covering subjects as far ranging as electrolytic capacitors and early pianos. Following his studies in physics at the University of South Carolina, he developed and produced the pioneering flat medical grade electrolytic capacitor that made thoracic implantable cardioverter defibrillators possible. Additionally, he has an interest in early keyboard studies and has published extensively on early keyboards and their builders. He is archivist for the Clinkscale Early Piano database and is an annual presenter at the North American Historical Keyboard Society conference, and Finchcocks in the UK. He has built and restored many pianos and harpsichords over the past 20 years, and has an important personal collection of working instruments in the Upstate of South Carolina.
