Lake Bogoria is one of the most fascinating lakes of the Great Rift Valley that physically divides Kenya. The Lake Bogoria National Reserve was founded in 1970 and today covers an area of a hundred and seven square kilometres. Unlike most of Kenya's other nature reserves the area around Lake Bogoria has not yet become a busy safari destination thus it is calm and tranquil. It contains several remote and peaceful areas in which animals, and particularly flamingos, can be observed at close quarters. Along the western shores of the lake hot water geysers shoot up into the air. They indicate the subterranean energy of this volcanic region. The flamingos inhabit the opposite shores due to the high temperatures and sulphurous gases. At Lake Bogoria both Nature's origins and the development of the landscape of the Great Rift Valley reveal themselves in all their original might and splendour.
