Kai Knutson '11 was one of forty graduates from colleges and universities throughout the U.S. awarded the Watson Fellowship to pursue a year of independent international travel to explore a particular subject. For his project, "Things Not Seen: Hunting Microbes in Dairy Cultures Around the World", Kai traveled through ten countries in Europe and Asia and used his talent for microbiology and passion for food to examine diverse traditions and wisdom regarding fermented milks such as yoghurt, dahi, and tarag. Since returning to the U.S., Kai has been employed by Land O'Lakes, Inc. where he shared his passion as an associate in the company's talent development program. Kai recently returned to Carleton to deliver the keynote address of the college's annual Honors Convocation, entitled "Passion is More Like Yoghurt Than Butter."

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
