Saskatchewan-born designer and entrepreneur Rachel Mielke founded Hillberg & Berk in 2007. Years earlier, she started designing jewellery at her kitchen table and soon realized it was more than a hobby; it was her passion.
In 2008, Mielke entered CBC's Dragons' Den. She emerged with national exposure and a sizeable, $200,000 investment from Saskatchewan-born business mogul and philanthropist W. Brett Wilson.
2013 was the biggest year to date for H&B, in sales, growth, and recognition. In early 2013, Mielke was commissioned by the Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan to create a brooch for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. On October 17, the Queen was presented the brooch from the Lieutenant-Governor at Buckingham Palace.
Mielke has been recognized many times as a leader in her field and for her social commitment. She received, among others, the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, the Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan Emerging Business Award, Silver Lining Top 10 Entrepreneurs of North America, the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership's Exporter of the Year Award, the Business Development Bank of Canada's Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.
