The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to help you to discover nature and learn more about redbirds, better known as cardinals.

A large member of the finch family, cardinals are one of Missouri's most popular birds.

While the males bright red feather grabs the attention, female cardinals are often overlooked in their mostly brown, drab plumage.

But a crested head and thick, red beak identify the females as cardinals too.

A cardinals physical beauty is equaled by their clear, whistled song.

Late winter, males can be heard urging on the coming spring.

Female cardinals often join in the singing¬-an unusual behavior in songbirds.

Since cardinals like backyard habitats, they are easy to observe, especially if you have the right type of birdseed.

Well, you want to start with a good quality birdseed.
Try to stay away from the poor quality birdseeds, the one that has mostly the milo in it.
You want to concentrate on the birdseeds that have a good quality of food and a mixture of sunflower seeds in it.

Watch for cardinals early in the morning or late in the evening, their preferred feeding time.
