The Missouri Department of Conservation encourages you to discover nature and participate in a yuletide tradition that dates back more than a century: the Chirstmas bird count.
During the 1800s, participants competed to bag the most wild birds.
In 1900, bird lovers banded together and started an alternative to the hunt.
Now, every December, bird watchers throughout the country flock together to count birds.
Sponsored by the Audubon society, the early-winter bird census involves 60,000-plus volunteers who list the number of individual bird species they see or hear in one calendar day.
The Christmas bird count is important because it gives us a window in the winter time over multiple years about the status of birds.
The findings from the annual count shape conservation efforts, congressional decisions and help answer questions such as “how are the bluebirds doing?” And “what new birds are showing up?”
