The Missouri Department of Conservation wants you to discover nature in the sound of a bugling elk.
Located in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks, now is a prime time to see and hear the bugles of Missouri’s restored elk herd.
The elk breeding season is in late September and early October, so this is when they’re very vocal and active.
The male elk’s bugle is a shrill sound that wards off other males as it also attracts the females.
The best chances of seeing elk are around sunrise or sunset along the conservation department’s self-guided driving tour of the area.
While there are no guarantees of an elk sighting, the tour is a beautiful drive through fields, forest and glades.

For more opportunities to discover nature this month, check out these events at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center.
