This Halloween, don’t get spooked by the eerie sounds of the night…discover nature and learn some common owl calls.
The barn owls’ voice is harsh, with screeching, hissing and clicking sounds.
The great horned owl has a series of three to eight deep hoots.
Barred owls are heard in the darker hours; they make a sound similar to: “who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?”
The witch-like scream of the screech owl is not so much a screech, but rather a soft, mournful whinny.
Owls play an important role in controlling populations of mice, rats, frogs, lizards, insects and rabbits.
They tend to select the easiest to catch, thus forging a healthier prey population.
